Todd Mclellan was born among the golden wheat fields of Saskatchewan (Canada). Inspired by many great image-makers, he has a fascination with visuals that combine different disciplines. Todd enjoys creating his visuals in studio and on location.
His latest series “Things Come Apart” explores the material world around us. Disassembling and laying out the pieces of each objects and then in a second frame, releasing them from the confines of structure to visualize both the complexity and simplicity of modern and classic pieces. The series brings to mind the consumption of technology in our everyday lives. Todd answered a short interview about his freelance work and art.
Todd, where do you get your inspiration?
This happens in everyday life. Something seen in the street or on a daily drive/walk. In the case of the Things Come Apart series it was from seeing this old technology put to the curb. I had collected them in my office for years and wanted to portray them in a new light.
Which is the relationship and influence between your cultural background (country, studies, etc.) and your artworks?
I am very much a hands on person much like my parents. I like building, fixating creating things. This was the first project that I was able to blend the two worlds together.
What are you much focused in?
I love still life and creating a feeling from a simple image. I tend to focus my photography on objects rather than people.
Have you encountered any difficulties when you first started your art/freelance career?
Absolutely and I don’t think difficulties ever end.
You always have to keep proving yourself in your career. Getting the first bump of recognition is probably the easiest, to keep getting recognized in the industry is a journey.
Over these years, what is the most important thing you have learnt from your profession?
Believe in yourself and find your audience.
Keep sharing your work to all markets. If you feel really strong about it but your geography does not, find one that does. If that fails then move on.
Do you think that a creative job is just creativity or it’s discipline too?
Discipline is really important. I think that’s what separates the professionals from the amateurs. The world is beautiful and as a photographer capturing it is easy. Creating something unique from that beauty requires discipline.
Are you currently work on new projects?
Right now I am exploring many areas but haven’t landed on one solid project yet. I think I would like to get out of the studio for the next project.
Creating something unique
from that beauty
requires discipline.
