Frank Moth exists as an artist and as an alias for the two people that hide behind him. He was born in Athens in March 2014. Frank Moth creates digital collage art – mainly human-centered – from a distant but at the same time familiar future. “The presence of the human element is obvious, yet perpetually incomplete. There’s always something missing, interrupted, or covered“. Frank Moth’s acclaimed style has been featured in many publications worldwide, such as Huffington Post US, as well as Buzzfeed and MTV Greece. His work is currently showcased around the world in many galleries online
Where do you get your inspiration?
We draw inspiration from many different things that vary from old ads and 50s, 60s vintage imagery to the past decades’ pop culture. We like several color combinations and objects that may seem mundane. Inspiration can also come from pieces of our past that we mix with our every day life, creating images with nostalgia and retro atmosphere.
Which is the reletioship and influence beetween your cultural backgorund (country, studies, etc.) and your artworks?
Even though creative expression is a universal need, we hail from a country (Greece) where education and tradition are intertwined and interconnected with art both through history and society. The way we were brought up, our childhood and our life experiences also plays an important role in the creation of our artworks. Our studies are the only thing that has not influenced our art.
What are you much focused in?
We are more focused in digital vintage collage but with people in the epicenter. We create retro but at the same time surreal surroundings where people live, thrive or find meaning. This is why we see our creations as nostalgic postcards from the future.
Have you encountered any difficulties when you first started your art/freelance career?
It is very difficult to actually turn your hobby into a job, since it involves so many technical things. If you manage to find a balance so as to not lose the freedom of expression in creating, then everything is easier.
Over these years, what is the most important thing you have learnt from your profession?
We have learned that you should never underestimate the objectivity with which everyone perceives an artwork. Don’t rush into labelling artworks. Something you find mediocre, someone else may find exciting and something you find beautiful, someone else may find weird. Interpretation is everything. Another very important lesson we learnt is that you should never quit creating, since you never know where it may take you and what can happen in the future.
Do you think that a creative job is just creativity or it’s discipline too?
It may sound like a cliche, but it is a balance between the two. You can’t be creative without setting some kind of freedoms and limitations that will help you evolve. While people may think the exact opposite, we believe that you cannot exist within the world of art without discipling yourself to specific rules.
Are you currently work on new projects?
If you want to keep evolving your art, you want to always move and try new things and discover new ways of expression.
