Hernan Castelli (aka Rayita) is an illustrator, graphic designer and “photographer of Giants“. Rayita is pretty famous on social networks due to his “invasions” of reality; a mixture of normality, unreality and sense of humor. All these ingredients are put together in a way that is never trivial or obvious. We met Hernan for an interesting interview; there are some interesting tips for freelancers and artists!
Hernan, where do you get your inspiration?
From that part of me that still thinks that I can create positive change with my art, even if it’s a small one.
Which is the relationship and influence beetween your cultural backgorund (country, studies, etc.) and your artworks?
I think my studies in graphic design have definetly influenced me in the tools I choose and the way I approach my creative process. The collection of imagery I’ve stacked in the back of my head from the other artists I’ve met or seen their work, my experiences in general, my travels, the people I meet, the conversations I had; all that can sometimes end up as an art piece.
What are you much focused in?
I’m mostly focused in making sure that my voice is reflected in what I do.
Have you encountered any difficulties when you first started your art/freelance career?
I think my main difficulty was how to be seen, how to pass the point where only your family and friends congratulate you for your work.
Social networks are great and they give you exposure but I found out, I also had to go into the ‘real’ world and physically show my work to people.
Over these years, what is the most important thing you have learnt from your profession?
Better done than perfect.
Do you think that a creative job is just creativity or it’s discipline too?
I think that sometimes an idea, an image just pops in your head and creativy seems to come out of nowhere, but there’s really no magic.
The more you practice, the more discipline you have, those moments of, what it looks like spontaneous creativity, become more often.
Are you currently working on new projects?
Yes but I tend not to tell anyone about them, not until they are done.
